EU does not take data protection of its own citizens seriously | Noseda’s article for Tax Notes | FATCA, CRS, GDPR

In an article published July 7 at Tax Notes, lawyer Filippo Noseda explains that the EU is not serious about the data protection interests of its own citizens.
The EU participates in large-scale exchange of financial personal data of its citizens with the entire world [*], despite the risks involved. The most significant example is its cooperation with the U.S. FATCA law, as a result of which Citizenship-Based Taxation is imposed on people who are unlucky enough to be born in the U.S. (Accidental Americans).

[*] Automatic exchange of information (AEOI), based on the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and on the common reporting standard (CRS) developed by the OECD.
