Sophie in’t Veld on the de-regulation myths of the EU | AML, CFT, surveillance

Sophie in’t Veld published an article on the de-regulation myths of the EU, mentioning the political selectivity of de-regulation:

The de-regulation agenda is rather selective and ideologically driven. EU technocratic lingo really means dialling down climate policies, human rights and data protection. Trump without the fanfare, so to say.

The ineffective anti-money laundering bureaucracy is mentioned in this text:

Interestingly, the Commission is quiet on killing some right-wing darlings, for example excessive surveillance of citizens, excessive reporting requirements on civil society or excessive controls on people on social security or migrants. Why does the Commission not want to lift the administrative burden on companies like banks, air carriers, telecom companies or tech giants who are required to monitor their customers and share their data, on behalf of law enforcement agencies? Why does the Commission refuse to even evaluate the effectiveness of these measures?”
