In an earlier post on this blog I mentioned the article by Andreas Kluth for Bloomberg: Next, the Supreme Court Decides How to Punish US Expats.
On 30 September Alice Kantor wrote for Bloomberg: Americans Abroad Renounce Citizenship to Escape Tax Law’s Clutches, with the introduction:
FATCA, aimed at cracking down on offshore tax evasion, is hurting accidental US citizens who can’t open bank accounts.
It shows that the US has gone overboard in its activities to combat tax evasion and that fundamental rights of citizens are being violated. It would be good if policymakers involved in fighting crime (money laundering, tax evasion) realise that there are major risks to their systems.
