Victims of CBT/FATCA establish ‘Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad’ against Citizenship-Based Taxation

Victims of the American tax laws (Citizenship-Based Taxation, ‘CBT’) and FATCA (the  law forcing financial institutions to supply financial personal data of US citizens that reside outside the US to the US government) have announced that they have founded an organisation against CBT: Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad.

The organisation represents the interests of all tax residents of Europe with US citizenship, i.e. both accidental Americans and Americans who became residents of Europe later in life. In a post on linkedin they announced:

This week marked a minor milestone in the push for residence-based taxation for Americans abroad: the constitutional meeting of Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad.

A new non-partisan, non-profit organization, Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad has the sole mission of freeing Americans abroad from the discrimination, costs and hassles that result from the U.S. system of citizenship-based taxation (CBT).

In its first meeting, the group elected a nine-member Board representing Americans with extensive experience both as victims of the extraterritorial effects of U.S. CBT and as advocates for change.

The group also elected:
·      Brandon Mitchener as Executive Director
·      Robert Mack as Treasurer
·      Eric Vence as Secretary

Our website is still a work in progress (we’ll tell the world when it launches) but we already have an address in Washington, D.C., a social media presence on LinkedIn, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) and a GoFundMe campaign. Organized by Fabien Lehagre on behalf of the Association des Américains Accidentels (AAA), the fundraising campaign has already collected (as of this announcement) more than $89,000 towards hiring world-class public relations advisors and lobbyists in Washington, D.C.

If you believe in the cause, could you please:
1.    Follow us on our social media channels (here, FB, X)
2.    Share some of your own personal experiences with CBT on one of those channels, especially Facebook and LinkedIn, so people in Congress can see them
3.    Spread the word about this new initiative to other Americans abroad
4.    Donate anything you can to help get us started via GoFundMe
5.    And let us know via private message if you would like to do more ?

Thank you and please wish us luck!

Amended on 22 April 2024
with information from the new Tax Fairness page on linkedin.

Addition 10 July 2024
Currently the organisation has a website: axfairnessabroad.org, from the front page::

Our mission is to ensure tax and financial fairness for Americans abroad by ending Citizenship-Based Taxation.

What we want
The estimated 9 million Americans abroad are already subject to taxation where they live. They shouldn’t also have to declare non-U.S. income or face discrimination and unfair and disproportionate penalties for maintaining bank accounts in the countries where they live just because they choose to live abroad.
Help us end Citizenship-Based Taxation and all the unfairness, high costs and hassles it imposes on Americans living abroad!

On 1 July a press release was published.
