“EU law precludes the general and indiscriminate retention of traffic and location data, except in the case of a serious threat to national security” | CJEU, surveillance

Again the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has decided “EU law precludes the general and indiscriminate retention of traffic and location data, except in the case of a serious threat to national security“, read the press release in the SpaceNet and Telekom Deutschland cases, full text and résumé are found here.

Like before EU member state governments and the European bodies, such as the European Commission and the European Council, will not be pleased and will try to work around the ruling. They will hopefully start to see the importance of European fundamental rights protection after all.
