Eerder schreef ik over eu-LISA, de Europese organisatie die gespecialiseerd is in biometrie. eu-LISA beheert de Europese IT-infrastructuur op het gebied van onder meer immigratie. Naar verwachting zullen hun taken worden uitgebreid.

Over hun activiteiten, naar aanleiding van plannen van de Europese Commissie, is onlangs een opinie van de Europese privacy toezichtouder, de European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) verschenen. Op twitter vatten zij het thema van hun opinie als volgt samen:

Europese burgerrechtensite Statewatch besteedde aandacht aan de EDPS-opinie en vat de inhoud samen.

Eerder schreef ik over de voorstellen van de Europese Commissie inzake E-Evidence, met onder meer de verplichting om een vingerafdruk op de ID-kaart op te nemen. Biometrie is hot.

eu-LISA bracht een rapport uit “Shared Biometric Matching Service (sBMS). Feasibility Study – final report”. Uit de introductie blijkt een alle-eieren-in-een-mandje gedachte:

The sBMS has been conceived based on the key assumption that rather than having four or more individual biometric systems, each serving one IT system, eu-LISA and its stakeholders could benefit from implementing a unique shared biometric system that could be shared by all systems. Reduced IT complexity and costs, along with technical, financial, operational and managerial synergies have all been noted amongst the positive outcomes foreseen.

In this respect, eu-LISA had to identify and analyse the feasibility of different architectural options for the implementation of the sBMS, capable of supporting the various biometric operations of all current and future systems managed by the Agency.
