In her Inaugural Lecture, Mak will address the challenges which affect judiciaries in Europe in light of the ongoing process of legal integration and in light of changing societal demands regarding judicial functioning. In the European legal context, firstly, a multi-level system of rules and institutions has developed, in which national and European courts have to establish their role and competences and develop their interaction with each other. As a second challenge, judiciaries in Europe have to deal with changing societal expectations concerning judicial functioning. In this regard, judicial organisation and professional standards for judges are increasingly considered in terms of relevance, quality and efficiency, and accountability. Processes of harmonisation of legal rules and procedures, combined with the European Commission’s ambition to establish ‘a true European judicial culture’ amongst legal professionals, underline the need for judges in the European Union to engage with these issues.
