It is common knowledge that the major advertising companies (Meta/Facebook, Google and others), ‘adtech’, facilitate criminal activity on a large scale [1]. So far, hardly any action has been taken against this.
Perhaps this will change now that the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has filed a complaint [2] against Meta, TikTok and Google with he European Commission and the competent national Digital Services Coordinators together with 29 BEUC-members across 27 countries. In the announcement BEUC writes:
The findings show that financial scams remain widespread on Meta, TikTok, and Google, and that platforms systematically fail to take effective corrective actions.
In total, we flagged 893 fraudulent ads across 13 countries that were active on either Meta, TikTok or Google.
It is remarkable that the European legislator still takes these adtech companies seriously, as can be inferred from the new Article 59a of the PSR. It seems to me that the PSR urgently needs to be amended.
Notes:
[1] See e.g. the Dutch central bank in an article on online fraud, they write that online criminality often starts with the services provided by adtech companies to consumers (the so-called ‘social media’), “De ervaring van banken leert dat de meeste online misdrijven beginnen op sociale media. Mede om die reden riep de Nederlandse Vereniging van Banken (NVB) sociale mediabedrijven recent op om actiever op te treden tegen online criminelen. Die proberen vaak met nepadvertenties of privéberichten slachtoffers te verleiden om te investeren in een product dat niet bestaat, om iets te kopen dat nooit geleverd wordt of zelfs om een online relatie met een fictief persoon te beginnen, ‘datingfraude’ in jargon.“.
