How advertising companies shape young Europeans’ worldviews

Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), a British organisation that is part of a British innovation charity, Nesta, published the article How social media shapes young Europeans’ worldviews on their study Algorithms and democracy. BIT was commissioned by the Finnish innovation fund Sitra to study young people’s experiences with the services by advertising companies (the so called ‘social media’) and the political content they encounter there.

Some of the findings:

  • Right-wing content dominates.
  • Algorithmic unpredictability and a lack of user control.
  • Problematic content that does not violate community guidelines.
  • AI-generated content is an emerging trend.
  • The ongoing deterioration of social media quality.
